Pediatric Pathology Fellowship

The Department of Pathology at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University School of Medicine is offering a fellowship in pediatric pathology. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is affiliated with Emory University School of Medicine, and is the largest children's healthcare system in the United States. Broad training in all aspects of pediatric pathology is supported by the diversity of the training locations, teaching faculty, and abundant material available to the fellow.

Children‘s Healthcare of Atlanta pediatric pathology department consists of 8 pediatric pathologists, 3 hematopathologists, 2 clinical microbiologists, one neuropathologist, one pathology informaticist, and 3 transfusion medicine specialists, all with subspecialty board certification. The healthcare system has 575 licensed beds with almost 230,000 ER visits yearly. In 2015, 922,861 children from 159 counties in Georgia visited for treatment. There are over 12,000 surgical pathology and more than 2,500 cytopathology specimens per year, including the full complement of pediatric tumors, transplant specimens, GI biopsies and resections, bone marrows, and placental pathology. Pediatric autopsies per year average almost 75, including consult fetal autopsies. Autopsy training in forensic pathology is available as a rotation at Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Expertise is present within the department of pediatric pathology in specialty areas including pediatric renal pathology, neuropathology (including brain tumor examination and muscle biopsy interpretation), perinatal pathology, and liver and transplant pathology. Clinical pathology and laboratory management are also key features of the fellowship. With a test volume of more than 1.5 million tests per year, faculty and technical expertise within the clinical laboratory covers the breadth of pediatric clinical laboratory medicine. The clinical pathology rotations are designed to provide the fellow with optimal training in clinical laboratory medicine tailored to the pediatric patient. A strong focus on management principles affords the fellow an opportunity to hone leadership skills necessary for success. Teaching opportunities abound. Residents from the Emory University pathology program rotate at the various campuses, and the fellow has the opportunity to teach and mentor these trainees. Multiple conferences in both pediatric and perinatal medicine allow the fellow the opportunity to gain experience in presenting to colleagues.

Research is encouraged and supported. The department of pediatric pathology has two research coordinators, and an advanced diagnostics laboratory that provides technical support in the areas of immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization, PCR analysis, and gene sequencing. Collaboration with Emory investigators housed in the new pediatric Emory/Children's research building provides additional resources to afford support in both translational as well as basic science research. The large patient population also provides a rich resource for outcomes studies, and the department of pediatric pathology, in conjunction with the Children's Outcomes Center, supports those investigations.
