All Call is Taken From Home During Otolaryngology Rotations
The call pool during the otolaryngology residency is divided into juniors (PGY-2 and PGY-3) and seniors (PGY-4 and PGY-5).
The hospitals are separated into two geographically grouped call pools. The first consists of Emory University Hospital, the Atlanta VA Healthcare System, and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital, all of which are in the eastern region of Atlanta, near Decatur. The second call pool includes Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown, located in downtown and midtown Atlanta, respectively.
Each night, one junior resident covers each hospital group, with a single senior resident and an attending as backup.
Junior residents are on call for approximately eight nights per month. Weekend call includes the entire weekend, meaning weekends off are entirely free. Senior residents are generally on backup call one night per week, and typically on eight weekends spaced throughout the year.
Our program also covers facial trauma every third night in rotation with the divisions of plastic surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery. PGY-1s take buddy calls are taken on either Saturdays or Sundays. Call for PGY-1 off-service rotations is managed by the department responsible for the rotation, with call occurring no more frequently than every third night.
