Course Title: Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, A Clinical Primer
Overview
This elective accepts one-to-two students, and is located at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Center of Grady Memorial Hospital.
Following completion of the elective, students will be able to integrate their knowledge base during their anatomy and physiology courses as it pertains to disorders and diseases of the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck.
Schedule/Format
Clinical observership and focused didactics. The students will attend a weekly afternoon clinic to observe otolaryngologists (Wednesday afternoons, 1:00pm-5:00pm). At the completion of the clinic, a focused didactic or synthesis of observations will occur. Additional opportunities to observe surgery are also provided.

Reading material: Primary Care Otolaryngology

Demonstration of and hands-on-instruction in the head and neck physical examination

Observation of attending otolaryngologists and patients in the clinic

Graded hands-on patient contact to develop head and neck examination skills

Focused brief lectures on applicable topics and the end of the learning session

Self-directed learning project chosen by the student and approved by the director, culminating in a 15 minute oral presentation on the topic (evaluation of the self-directed learning project is based upon an assessment of the student's professionalism, communication skills, and physical exam skills by the attending physicians)
