Clinical Locations

The Emory University Sports Medicine Center provides the environment and facilities for acquiring knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and attitudes essential to the practice sports medicine. The program director, supporting faculty and staff, and the administration are fully committed to the educational program.

Clinical Experience

Understand the nature and variety of injuries occurring in athletics and active individuals of all ages
Understand the biomechanics of athletic injuries and their prevention
Develop an understanding and treatment strategy for athletic injuries
Develop the educational and organization skills to become a team physician
Be able to diagnose and treat complex injuries and pathology about the knee, shoulder, wrist, hip, ankle and elbow, concussion and other sport specific injuries.
Become proficient in the use of diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound. Fellows will begin their training with a two-day American Sports Medicine Institute ultrasound course co-sponsored by Emory and the Andrews Institute in Birmingham, AL to familiarize themselves with diagnostic and interventional ultrasound prior to beginning their clinical rotations. Each fellow will receive a portable ultrasound (Butterfly iQ) to use for practice and event coverage

Routine procedures

• Injection of large (shoulder, hip, knee, elbow), medium (ankle, sacroiliac, carpal tunnel), & small (MTP, CMC, RC, AC, ganglion cysts) joints/bursae
• Tendons/Ligaments (RC, biceps, common extensor, common flexor, De Quervain’s, trigger finger, IT Band, gluteal muscles, iliopsoas, piriformis, patellar, peroneal, plantar fascia)
• Nerves (radial, ulnar, median, suprascapular)
• Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy
• Corticosteroid, prolotherapy, PRP, bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), micro-fragmented adipose tissue (MFAT)
• Compartment testing

Anticipated Advanced Procedural Exposure

• Percutaneous device tenotomy (Tenex, Ocelot). Dedicated cadaveric workshop with vendor.
• Thoracic outlet syndrome diagnostic injections (pectoralis minor, scalenes in addition to above)
• Alpha-2-macroglobulin
• Sternoclavicular injection
• Scapulothoracic injection
• Core muscle injury injections (pubic symphysis, adductors, abdominal fascia)
• High Volume Image Guided (HVIG) Injections
• Fluoroscopy (medial branch block/ablation, ESI)
• Genicular nerve ablation (COOLieF)
• Ultrasound guided flexor retinaculum release (SONEX). Dedicated cadaveric workshop with vendor

Program Research and Scholarly Activity

Design and implement at least one research project for presentation at a national meeting and submit for publication in a peer-review journal
Upon the Fellow's arrival August 1, an outline of research topics will be discussed with him/her. He/she will select the project(s) in which he/she is interested or submit a modification of one for approval. In instances when the fellow has a well-outlined research idea, this project may be implemented during his/her fellowship year. The fellow will select a research mentor among the sports medicine faculty and adjunct faculty. One half-day per week is allotted toward dedicated research-related activities.

Research Personnel and Facilities

The Emory Department of Orthopaedics has numerous opportunities for orthopaedic research. The sports medicine fellow will be expected to take advantage of these resources to design, implement and complete his/her research hypothesis.

Facilities

The Emory Department of Orthopaedics has one biomechanics laboratory for research purposes. The Emory Sports Medicine Fellow will have his/her own workspace, phone, and desktop computer.

Library

The Emory Sports Medicine Fellow will have access to a well maintained library in our conference room as well as the Emory Health Sciences Library.

Sports Medicine Experience

Our staff provides coverage for numerous local colleges, including Emory University, Georgia Tech, Oglethorpe University, Agnes Scott College, and Georgia Perimeter College. In addition, we provide coverage for several area high schools. This clinical volume provides an extensive opportunity for diagnosing and treating sports medicine pathology during the fellowship.

Salary/Vacation

The Emory PM&R Sports Medicine Fellow will receive a salary commensurate with PGY level (changes yearly). A comprehensive health insurance, malpractice and benefits package is also provided. The fellow will receive two weeks of paid vacation during the year, with no more than one week to be taken consecutively. The fellow will travel to two conferences per year, in addition to any conference in which he/she is the presenting author of a paper.
