Mission
The mission of the Translational Neuro-Engineering Laboratory is to generate and use new advanced technologies to improve the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. We focus in particular on the pipeline from conception through animal model testing in preparation for early clinical feasibility testing. Our approach is to engage basic scientists and engineers to focus on important clinical needs - treatment gaps - and conceptualize, strategize and shepherd the technical insights into appropriate animal models where they can be incorporated, developed and refined.
Focus
Our current focus is on epilepsy and regeneration, using strengths in molecular engineering, biomedical engineering and neurophysiology. These studies presently involve gene therapy, cell therapy, electrical stimulation, physiological biomarkers such as single-unit and local field potential recordings, optogenetics, luminopsins (bioluminescent optogenetic probes), closed loop algorithm design and computational modeling. We welcome all levels of scientists from faculty to high school students to work with us towards our goals.
