Emory's Neurosurgical Oncology fellowship is directed by Kimberly Hoang, MD. The program has been accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Subspecialty Training (CAST) of The Society of Neurological Surgeons since 2009.
The Brain Tumor Program at Emory University is a leading center of excellence for the research and treatment of tumors involving the central nervous system. A one-year Surgical Neuro-oncology Fellowship opportunity is available for advanced training in the surgical and clinical care of patients with intracranial tumors and tumors within the skull base, spine, and spinal cord. Particular expertise and mentoring is available in:
- Neuro-endoscopy (intraventricular and endonasal skull base)
- Transsphenoidal pituitary surgery
- Petrosal and far-lateral approaches to the skull base
- Complex anterior skull base tumor resection and repair
- Stereotactic radiosurgery
- Investigational fluorescent surgical imaging techniques
- Surgery with functional image-guidance utilizing magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging and functional MRI
Fellows are expected to participate in the weekly multi-disciplinary Adult Brain Tumor Conference (ABTC) and the monthly Neuro-Oncology Working Group (NOWG) clinical trials conference. Extensive research opportunities exist in both basic (neuro-oncology laboratory) and clinical areas. Participation in ongoing NIH and other supported clinical trials is encouraged.
The successful fellow will
- Serve as an attending neurosurgeon in the Emory Affiliated Hospitals System and The Emory Clinic, Inc (for fellows who have completed a neurosurgical residency).
- Serve as a clinical track Instructor in the Emory University School of Medicine, participating in the clinical training of neurological surgery residents and medical students.
- Participate in clinical and/or basic science research specific to neurosurgical oncology.
- Participate in attending neurosurgery clinical service call coverage two to five days a month (for fellows who have completed a neurosurgical residency).
- Develop a plan for, and complete submission of, a publication related to the research and clinical activity participated in during the fellowship period.
- Display proficiency in neuro-oncology-related skills including diagnosis, surgery and treatment.
Qualifications
Qualified applicants will be in one of two categories:
Applicants will have completed an ACGME accredited neurosurgery residency in the United States or Canada and be board eligible/certified in neurosurgery so as to be licensable in Georgia.
OR
For applicants who are still in neurosurgical residency and are doing an enfolded fellowship, they must have successfully completed their neurosurgery chief resident year in an ACGME accredited program in the United States or Canada and be in good standing at their residency as documented by their program director.
