Match Application Process
The Match process takes place through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) each spring in March. Applicants are encouraged to apply when the system opens in September prior to the match.
Applicants will be screened based on board scores and medical school GPA. Typically, 50 applicants will receive invitations for interviews, which is in addition to the interviews granted to well-qualified rotating medical students. Interviews are conducted with tours of the separate hospitals and a lively interview dinner, followed by faculty and resident interviews.
Application Qualifications
Qualified applicants are ranked based on the following factors:
- Competitive USMLE Step 1 Board Scores
- At least three letters of recommendation (one should be from home program Chairman)
- Competitive medical school GPA
- Medical school composite letter and included rotation comments
- Extracurricular activities
- Interview with faculty and residents
- Publications, presentations and extent of research
Second Looks
Students are not required to come back for second looks in order to match into the program, nor do second looks factor into the ranking process. Second looks provide students with a more in-depth look at the city and the day-to-day workings of the program. Accommodations will be made for students who wish to return, as well as access to the operating room for a chance to shadow current residents.
Visas
The Emory University Office of Graduate Medical Education will sponsor a J-1 visa to any foreign medical school student that is offered a position in the department. The department can also sponsor H1B- visas. Information on Visa eligibility can be found here.
