SUO Fellow Dr. Taylor Goodstein Wins First Place in JCO’s Inaugural Narrative Medicine Contest
December
Our second-year SUO fellow, Dr. Taylor Goodstein, has won first place in the Journal of Clinical Oncology's inaugural Narrative Medicine Contest.
Her essay, "A chance to heal with cold hard steel," is a personal reflection on her experience with an Emory cancer patient. The management for these patients can be far from straightforward, and Dr. Goodstein's poignant account asks hard questions – Is it possible to heal without curing? For a cancer with no other treatment options, when does surgical risk become too great? And when the odds are long, is the act of trying worthwhile in its own right?
Dr. Goodstein completed her medical training at University of Colorado and her residency at The Ohio State University. She has been writing throughout her medical career, but this her first competition win. We look forward to seeing what else she will produce as she grows in her career. Congratulations, Dr. Goodstein!
