Emory Urology Involvement in 2019 AUA Annual Meeting

May 2019

The 114th Annual American Urologic Association (AUA) Meeting was held in Chicago, May 3-6, 2019. The meeting is considered the largest gathering of urologists in the world, and various Emory Urology members contributed to the program's comprehensive schedule of the latest clinical and research updates in the field.

For his podium session, Mehrdad Alemozaffar, MD, presented "Evaluation of Fluciclovine (FACBC) Pet Scan for Staging High-Risk Prostate Cancer Before Primary Treatment," which concluded that fluciclovine PET-CT appeared to be a valuable tool for pre-treatment staging of patients with high-risk prostate cancer with a high specificity for detection of metastatic lymph nodes, and that it could help in decision-making for treatment options and assist in guiding lymph node dissection during surgery.

The podium session presented by Akanksha Mehta, MD, "Qualitative Assessment of Male Partner Needs among Infertile Couples," found that male partners of infertile couples experience substantial emotional and psychological distress, which is often unrecognized, highlighting the need for specific support services geared toward the male partner. Dr. Mehta also presented "Klinefelter Syndrome: We Should Intervene Early on These Patients" for the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction sub-specialty meeting.

Viraj Master, MD, PhD, served on the instructional faculty for the course "Updates in the Management of Penile Cancer: A Case-Based Approach," and was a panelist for the plenary session "Complex Cases: Penile Cancer." Martin Sanda, MD, was a panelist for the "Enhanced PET Imaging for High Risk and Advanced Prostate Cancer: Ready for Prime Time?" plenary session.

At the Urological Society for American Veterans sub-specialty meeting, Muta Issa, MD, was a group topic speaker for "The Need for Standardization of Urologic Equipment, Processes and Procedures at VA Medical Centers – How do we Unify & Achieve?" During the Society of Academic Urologists sub-specialty meeting, Chad Ritenour, MD, presented updates and thoughts from the Residency Review Committee for Urology.

Emory Urology held its annual alumni event at Mercat a la Planza, providing opportunities for networking among colleagues, alumni, current residents, faculty, and research staff.
