A National Leader in Breast Surgery
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Emory University School of Medicine established the Grant W. Carlson Lectureship in 2026 in recognition of Dr. Carlson’s 34 years of exemplary service to Emory. Dr. Carlson trained under Dr. Jurkiewicz and had a fruitful career as an oncologist and plastic surgeon. He served as Division Chief from 2010 to 2024 and expanded the division's clinical, educational, and academic mission while strengthening Emory's national reputation in reconstructive surgery. A nationally recognized leader in breast reconstruction, he made seminal contributions to the refinement of skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy techniques and advanced multidisciplinary approaches to breast cancer reconstruction.
Under Dr. Carlson's leadership, Emory established its integrated plastic surgery residency program, expanded faculty and clinical services, and fostered a culture of excellence in patient care, education, research, and mentorship. His commitment to developing future leaders in plastic surgery continue to influence generations of trainees and faculty, making this lectureship a fitting tribute to his extraordinary contributions to Emory and the specialty of plastic surgery.
