The division is pleased to welcome Dr. Chris MacLellan, who joined our division August 3 as an assistant professor specializing in magnetic resonance imaging. We're excited about the innovation and expertise he brings to our team and to Emory.
The Emory University Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences Clinical Division of Medical Physics was well represented at the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) 2026 Annual Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. Faculty contributed invited lectures, oral presentations, posters, workshops, and educational sessions spanning advanced medical imaging, photon-counting CT, Y-90 dosimetry, MRI-guided brachytherapy, medical physics education, and global collaboration. These contributions highlight the breadth of expertise, scholarship, and innovation within our division and our continued commitment to advancing medical physics through research, education, and clinical excellence.
The Division of Medical Physics is pleased to welcome Martina Orji, PhD as our newest Medical Physics Resident. We are excited to have Martina join our training program and look forward to supporting her professional growth as she develops the knowledge and clinical experience needed to become a future leader in medical physics.

Congratulations to Dr. Izabella Barreto on being elected Board Member-at-Large of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Board of Directors. As an elected member of the Board, she will help guide the strategic direction of the world's largest organization dedicated to advancing medical physics and improving patient care.
Dr. Xiangyang Tang served on the Scientific Committee for the 9th International Conference on Image Formation in X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT Meeting 2026), held in Salt Lake City, Utah. This international conference brings together leading scientists and researchers from around the world to share advances in CT science and technology, and Dr. Tang's service reflects his leadership and recognition within the global CT research community.

Dr. Amir Pourmorteza presented an invited lecture, Photon-Counting CT in Pediatric Radiology, at the International Pediatric Radiology (IPR) Congress in Boston, Massachusetts. His presentation highlighted the emerging role of photon-counting CT in pediatric imaging and its potential to improve image quality while supporting dose optimization for young patients.

Dr. Amir Pourmorteza presented an invited lecture, Deep-Silicon Photon-Counting CT: A Summary of 3-Year Research in Spectral and Ultra-High-Resolution Imaging, at the 8th Workshop on Medical Applications of Spectroscopic X-ray Detectors held at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. The presentation highlighted advances in deep-silicon photon-counting CT technology and its applications in spectral and ultra-high-resolution imaging.

Dr. Izabella Barreto presented an introduction to Diagnostic Medical Physics to high school students participating in the Med PhysXplorers Outreach Program at the AAPM Spring Clinical Meeting in Orlando, FL. This session helped inspire the next generation of medical physicists and highlighted Emory’s commitment to education and community engagement.
The Department of Radiology gathered to celebrate Dr. James Galt at his retirement reception. Dr. Galt’s decades of contributions to nuclear medicine physics, education, and clinical innovation were recognized and honored by colleagues across the department.
Dr. Shalmali Dharmadhikari traveled to Tucson, Arizona, to serve as an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Radiology’s Medical Physics Part 3 Exam. This is an important professional service role that contributes to maintaining national standards in medical physics certification.

Dr. Puneet Sharma helped organize the 3rd Annual Emory MRI Seminar alongside technologists Zach Conrad and Purvi Shah. This one-day seminar was packed with the latest guidance and best practices on MR safety, new technology, clinical applications, and more. The symposium offered continuing education (CE) credits. Dr. James Galt and colleagues published a Practice Guideline in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology on procedure standards intended to assist nuclear cardiology practitioners in the appropriate use of 18F-flurpiridaz PET for myocardial perfusion imaging and blood flow quantification.

Dr. Shalmali Dharmadhikari and colleagues presented work on evaluating causes of excessive radiation during routine interventional radiology procedures at the SIIM 2025 Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging in Irvine, California (Masotti R*, Gichoya J W, Bercu Z, Krupinski E A, Cooper-Schifitto D, Barski Lori, Wang X, Dharmadhikari S, Newsome J. Dr. Ola Osunbayo, Dr. Shalmali Dharmadhikari, and Dr. Matt Goette taught the Fundamentals of Medical Imaging course in the Emory Medical Physics Certificate Program hosted by the Department of Radiation Oncology. This was the initial educational exchange in the medical physics certificate program between the departments of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and Radiation Oncology, and our division looks forward to continued collaborations in the program in the future.
Dr. James Galt, together with a team of Emory Radiology faculty collaborators, co‑authored an article in the Journal of the American College of Radiology presenting a practical road map from the Radiology AI Council for evaluating and deploying AI models in clinical practice. This collaborative effort highlights Emory’s leadership in shaping responsible and effective AI integration in imaging.

Dr. Shalmali Dharmadhikari organized the 2025 Emory CT Educational Symposium, a half-day professional development event for Emory technologists. The symposium was approved by ASRT for 4.25 Continuing Education (CE) credits.

Dr. Shalmali Dharmadhikari, Dr. Judy Gichoya (Division of Interventional Radiology), and Dr. Hari Trivedi (Division of Emergency and Trauma Imaging) were awarded the American College of Radiology (ACR) ASSESS-AI Grant, which includes Emory’s participation in the pilot of the ASSESS-AI project.
