The Emory University Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences Clinical Division of Medical Physics soared at the 2026 American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Annual Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. Faculty contributed invited lectures, scientific presentations, educational workshops, posters, and professional service activities, highlighting Emory's continued leadership in the field of medical physics.
Division faculty presented work spanning a wide range of topics, including photon-counting CT, advanced imaging, MRI-guided brachytherapy, Y-90 dosimetry, medical physics education, and international collaboration. Collectively, the division delivered numerous oral presentations, posters, educational sessions, and workshops, reflecting the breadth of expertise and innovation within Emory Medical Physics.
The educational workshop, "Basic Y-90 Image-Based Dosimetry: Past and Present," organized by Dr. Wendy Siman, showcased how the multidisciplinary collaboration between Dr. Siman and Emory nuclear medicine radiologist Dr. David Brandon leverages both clinical and medical physics perspectives on modern Y-90 transarterial radioembolization (TARE). As Y-90 therapy continues to evolve toward more personalized and outcome-driven treatment approaches, the workshop emphasized the critical role of quantitative imaging and image-based dosimetry in treatment planning, treatment verification, and patient-specific care. Participants gained insight into contemporary dosimetry methods within the Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) framework, as well as practical considerations for implementing accurate quantitative imaging techniques in clinical practice.
The annual meeting also provided an opportunity to engage with future leaders in the profession. Emory's Medical Physics Diagnostic Imaging Residency Program was represented at the AAPM Residency Fair by Program Director Dr. Xiangyang Tang, Assistant Program Director Dr. Shalmali Dharmadhikari, and faculty member Dr. Matt Goette. The team met with prospective applicants and highlighted the unique educational experiences, clinical training opportunities, and mentorship available through Emory's residency program.
Beyond scientific presentations, faculty participated in committee meetings, educational activities, and networking events with collaborators from around the world, further strengthening Emory's national and international presence within the medical physics community. The week concluded with the inaugural Emory Radiology Medical Physics Dinner, which brought together faculty members and their families to celebrate the division's accomplishments and continued growth. The gathering reflected Emory Medical Physics' commitment not only to excellence in research, education, and clinical care, but also to building meaningful professional relationships and fostering a strong, collaborative community.
