Curriculum
In the first semester of didactic coursework, candidates enrolled in our Core, Psychotherapy and Adult Psychoanalysis Programs take Introductory classes in Psychoanalytic Thought and Practice. These courses provide an orienting framework for lively discourse among colleagues-in-training with diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Additionally, these courses provide the conceptual tools necessary for navigating the depth and breadth of the EUPI Curriculum.
The first two years of study, “The Core Program,” offer candidates exposure to psychoanalytic theories of development, motivation, psychopathology, and psychotherapeutic action. Advanced courses in years three, four, and five focus on specific areas of clinical focus and psychoanalytic technique.
Each year of the didactic program, candidates attend seminars that span the following areas of psychoanalytic praxis:
- Psychoanalytic Theory
- Clinical Psychoanalysis and Technique
- Continuous Case Conference and Group Process
- Development and the Life Cycle
- Ethics
- Psychoanalysis and the Diversities
- Interdisciplinary Psychoanalysis
- Psychoanalytic Writing and Research
- Current Topics in Psychoanalysis
Courses
Most EUPI seminars convene weekly, for four to six consecutive weeks. The following courses meet for an entire semester: Introduction to Psychoanalytic Studies, Freud’s Psychoanalysis, and Inter-Institute Continuous Case Conference.
The below- listed courses are offered at least once every six years and are contingent on faculty availability. Yellow courses are in development and will be offered as early as Fall 2021 and no later than Fall 2023. Bear with us as we update our website. Soon, we will have links to each course listing. Current class schedules and syllabuses are accessible via Basecamp for registered candidates and faculty.

EUPI Faculty Courses and Professional Development
The EUPI believes that psychoanalysis is a life-long process of cultivating self and other awareness, attuned practice, and openness to new experiences. Given that formal psychoanalytic education occupies only few years in the career of a psychoanalytic professional, the EUPI encourages the ongoing education, consultation, and creative growth of its faculty members. To this end, we offer case study groups, host educational workshops, and provide opportunities for faculty to hone their leadership skills. At any point in time, EUPI Faculty members may return to the classroom as colleagues-in-learning to take courses not offered during their candidacy. Clinical Candidates who have progressed to advance standing may be invited to some Faculty workshops.
