Dr. Renee Read

Dr. Renee Read

Dr. Renee Read is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology and Hematology and Medical Oncology. She has created a multidisciplinary and collaborative research program focused on understanding the genetic basis and cellular origins of gliomas, which are the most common and deadly primary brain tumors in adult and children. The long-term goal of her research program is to discover new potential therapeutic targets and to devise new therapeutic strategies to eliminate glioma tumor cells and spare normal in neuro-glial stem and progenitor cells in the brain. Evaluation of the therapeutic relevance of developmental signaling pathways in gliomas is a major focus of her ongoing research projects.

Dr. Read received her Ph.D. in developmental biology from Washington University. She completed her postdoctoral training in developmental neurobiology and neuro-oncology at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and at the University of California – San Diego. Dr. Read’s research program has been supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), American Brain Tumor Association, the Rally Foundation for Child for Childhood Cancer Research, the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation (SBTF), the CURE Childhood Cancer Foundation, and Bayer Healthcare. She has won numerous awards for her creative and innovative research program, including a Pathway to Independence Award from NINDS and an Imagine, Innovate, and Impact (I3) Wow Award from the Dean of the Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Read is also committed to the improving research training for graduate students, medical students, and medical residents. She has served on the Executive Committee of the Cancer Biology graduate program, she has trained neurosurgery residents in laboratory research techniques, and she is a certified resiliency skills teacher as part of Emory’s participation in The Resiliency Collaborative programs.
