Making a Difference, One Delicious Treat at a Time: Emory Pathology Hosts International Bake Sale Supporting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives
The aroma of sweet treats filled the air at Emory University Hospital on Friday, May 19, 2023, as the Pathology Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Council hosted its inaugural International Bake Sale. From 10 AM to 2 PM, the hospital lobby became a marketplace of delectable delights from around the world. Setup in the EUH lobby was a strategic choice due to the significant flow of visitors daily. Adjacent to the coffee shop, our event was able to capitalize on its customer base, drawing in both hospital staff and coffee shop patrons alike.
The star attractions of the Bake Sale were undoubtedly the featured delectables representing diverse cultures from around the globe. Attendees were treated to a delightful array of flavors, including Jamaican meat patties, Lebanese turmeric cakes, Egyptian cookies, English lemon tarts, Turkish baklava, Peruvian tres leches cake, Chinese rice cookies, and Macedonian delicacies. Not only did these delectable treats tantalize taste buds, but they also sparked curiosity and interest in the cultural aspects of the food. Visitors enthusiastically asked questions about the origins and preparation of the items, creating an enriching experience that extended beyond just a simple purchase.
What made the event truly heartwarming was witnessing individuals buying items not just for themselves but also to share with others. The spirit of generosity was palpable as friends and families of patients purchased desserts for their loved ones, patients bought treats for nursing staff, nurses stocked up on items for their units, and staff members exchanged sweets with their coworkers. The Bake Sale not only raised funds for a noble cause but also fostered a sense of community and togetherness within the hospital.
Monetarily, the event was a resounding success, raising an impressive $1,000.00, including a very generous donation from our department chair, Dr. Silvestri. More importantly, the International Bake Sale demonstrated the power of food to unite people from different cultures and also showed how a small community event can make a significant impact. The success of the event has provided the Pathology DEI Council with financial means to continue their important work in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, making Emory University Hospital a beacon of compassion, understanding, and respect.
The Pathology DEI Council, being relatively new and having just completed its inaugural year in July, is dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the department, the hospital, and beyond. With the overwhelming success of the International Bake Sale, the council is now planning a second bake sale during the holiday season. Mark your calendars for the upcoming holiday season and join the DEI Council in their efforts to spread joy and support a family in need – celebrating the richness of cultural diversity while spreading the spirit of giving and compassion to the wider community.
Looking ahead, the DEI Council has an exciting lineup of future initiatives aimed at fostering cultural understanding, educational opportunities, and community engagement. Some of these initiatives include cultural film/documentary viewings, sponsored summer Pathology internships for high school students, collaboration with Morehouse to expose their medical students to pathology, book club sessions, volunteer events like Open Hand Atlanta, and even a potential fundraising ball.
For those inspired by the council's mission and eager to get involved, there's great news: The DEI Council warmly welcomes all interested individuals, including faculty, staff, residents, and fellows. If you wish to contribute your time, ideas, and energy to this noble cause, feel free to contact one of the co-chairs: Cliff Sullivan, Carlos Moreno, or Christina Gavegnano.
