Program Overview
The objective for this one-year fellowship in clinical neurophysiology with emphasis in neuromuscular diseases is to obtain a broad education in the clinical, electrodiagnostic, and pathophysiological aspects of neuromuscular diseases.
The program provides a strong foundation in general clinical neurophysiology so participating fellows are eligible for examination by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for added qualifications in clinical neurophysiology, as well as the Electrodiagnostic Medicine boards through the American Board of Electrodiagnostic and Neuromuscular Medicine (AANEM). Clinical experiences emphasize training in neuromuscular diagnosis and therapy, and our program also offers a unique exposure to neuromuscular (nerve and muscle) pathology.
Emory University serves as a major tertiary referral center for patients with neuromuscular disorders for Atlanta and the Southeast. The faculty provides internationally recognized expertise in peripheral neuropathies, ALS, muscular dystrophies, myasthenia gravis, and myopathies.
Clinical services offered by the faculty include:
- Neuromuscular clinics at The Emory Clinic
- Peripheral Nerve Clinic at The Emory Clinic
- Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic at The Emory Clinic
- ALS Clinic at The Emory Clinic at Executive Park 12
- Emory Electrodiagnostic Laboratory (>1400 EMG examinations/year)
- Grady Electrodiagnostic Laboratory (>600 EMG examinations/year)
- Neuromuscular Pathology Laboratory (>350 muscle and >115 nerve specimens/ year)
Fellows spend approximately 8 months of their time in our EMG labs as well as our neuromuscular subspecialty clinics (1-2 half days/week). Trainees spend 2 months/year with the Epilepsy Division at which time the have dedicated exposure to outpatient epilepsy clinics, outpatient/ambulatory EEG, as well as associated clinical conferences. Our program additionally includes exposure to evoked potentials/intraoperative monitoring (EP/IOM) for interested trainees (>700 cases/year at Emory hospitals and 120 cases/year at Grady hospital).
Didactic conferences include the following:
- Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Lecture Series (Tuesday and Thursday mornings, July-October)
- Weekly Epilepsy Lectures (Tuesday mornings, includes Journal Club and Chapter Review Sessions)
- Weekly EMG Conference at Executive Park 12 (Friday mornings, September-June)
- Weekly Combined Neurophysiology Conference at Brain Health Center Executive Park 12 (Thursday mornings, October-June)
- Weekly Neurology Grand Rounds at Executive Park 12 (Friday mornings, September - June)
Fellows are offered the annual American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine Electrodiagnostic Medicine In-Service exam.
