The Emory Division of Hospital Medicine (EDHM) had a strong presence at the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Converge national meeting, held March 30–April 1 in Nashville, TN. EDHM members from across Emory sites delivered 16 talks and presented 29 posters, including one Abstract Competition finalist co-authored by Harika Gorti, MD (Atlanta VA Medical Center [VA]) and presented by Emory Internal Medicine resident Ambre Flowers, MD. Monee Amin, MD, and Meredith Trubitt, MD (both VA) produced multiple Curbsiders Internal Medicine podcast episodes during SHM Converge.
Meeting highlights included the standing-room-only MED-TED Teaching Competition, organized by Annie Massart, MD (Emory University Hospital [EUH]), with Alex Arges, MD (EUH), serving as a judge; Stephen Gurley, MD (Grady), made the division proud with his strong entry in the competition.
Other high notes were struck with Babar Junaidi, MD’s (EUH) “Perioperative Cardiac Risk Assessment: Tools, Trends and Best Practices”; TaRessa Wills, MD's (Grady) “From Silence to Sound: Composing Better Care for Underserved Patients in the Heart of Nashville”; Manpreet Malik, MD’s (Grady) “The Spotlight is Ours: Embedding Procedural Care into Hospitalist Practice”; and Dr. Gorti’s “Delivering Better Feedback: A Clinician-Friendly Model for Real-Time Coaching and Upward Input.” Dan Dressler, MD (EUH), and Dustin Smith, MD (VA), taught an advanced learning course on evidence-based medicine. Dr. Dressler also presented on mitigating malpractice risk and neurologic physical examination for hospitalists. Dr. Massart presented talks on best practices for mentorship as well as inpatient nausea management.
Three EDHM faculty presented updates in clinical guidelines to large audiences: Jessica Nave, MD’s (EUH) “I Walk the (Flat) Line: the 2025 ACLS Updates” (an adapted version was earlier presented with Lisa Daniels Torrisi, MD, at the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds on February 24, 2026); Patricia Cheung, MD, PhD’s (Grady) “Updates in Gastroenterology”; and Dr. Smith’s “Bless Your Heart: Updates in Heart Failure.”
Mary Ann Hall, MPH, led a didactic session for new scholars on clinical vignette writing that was facilitated by Maha Sulieman, MD (Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital), while on the floor above, Yoo Mee Shin, MD (Emory University Hospital-Midtown), guided residents and students in a workshop to master interview skills. Aaron Gluth, MD (EUH), co-led a workshop titled “Walk the Line: Effective Communication During Challenging Patient Encounters” to close the conference out on the last day.
Manpreet Malik, MD, served as the Assistant Course Director for the conference and will serve as the Course Director for next year's meeting in Las Vegas. SHM Converge was a dynamic event highlighted by high-quality education, networking, and engagement for over 3,000 hospitalists.
