To be accepted into the program, candidates must be MDs with Board Certification in Internal Medicine who are currently residents or who have completed their training and intend to become certified in Internal Medicine.

Optimal candidates should have long-term career goals in academic medicine. Eligible applicants are considered for a possible position based on their academic credentials, ability, overall preparedness, communication skills, aptitude, and personal qualities (such as motivation and integrity).

Fellows gain a comprehensive clinical education and exposure to the breadth and depth of the hematology/oncology specialties by rotating in three main clinical settings: Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital, and the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The curriculum allows sufficient flexibility to accommodate fellows' specific research and clinical interests. Dedicated research time provides an environment for focused clinical or laboratory-based research.

During the first year of training, fellows receive broad practical experience in medical oncology and hematology through a mix of inpatient and outpatient rotations at Emory University Hospital, Winship Cancer Institute, Atlanta VA Medical Center, Grady Memorial Hospital, and Emory University Hospital Midtown. First year fellows have two half-day continuity clinics per week. The second and third years of fellowship are tailored to accommodate each fellow's career goals and research interests in two separate tracks.

Clinical Investigator

The clinical investigator track is intended for fellows planning to pursue clinical academic careers or community practice and/or are undecided.

  • Year 2: Fellows have up to 12 months of research time and two half-day continuity clinics per week. Continued research after the first 6 months will depend on each fellow's career goals and performance.
  • Year 3: Clinical rotations with a mix of inpatient/outpatient and two half-day continuity clinics per week.

Physician Scientist

The physician-scientist track is intended for fellows who are pursuing careers in translational (bench to bedside) research in hematology and/or medical oncology.

  • Year 2: Fellows spend 12 months in research and 1-2 half-day continuity clinics per week.
  • Year 3: Fellows spend 6 months in research (total 18 months research time) and 6 months in a mix of inpatient and outpatient rotations; in addition to 1-2 half-day continuity clinics per week.

ABIM Research Pathway

The ABIM Research Pathway is recommended only for MD/PhD applicants who intend to seriously pursue a career in translational research in hematology and/or oncology. This is a dual-certification program, following all requirements established by ABIM. Please refer to the dual-certification portion on the ABIM website. To learn more, visit:

  • ABIM Internal Medicine: Medical Oncology Policies
  • ABIM Research Pathways Policies and Requirements

ABIM-research track fellows start fellowship after two years of internal medicine (start as PGY3) and spend 4.5-5 years in hematology/oncology subspecialty training.

Curriculum

  • Year 1: Clinical rotations
  • Year 2: Research and 1-2 half-day continuity clinics per week.
  • Year 3: Research and 1-2 half-day continuity clinics per week.
  • Year 4: Either all research (similar to years 2-3) or six months clinical rotations and six months research, depending on fellowship year 5 (below)
  • Year 5: Six months of either research or clinical rotations (depending on year 4) and 1-2 half-day continuity clinics per week. Alternatively, year 5 may be fulfilled as Instructor (faculty position), at the discretion of leadership, with 80% commitment to mentored research. This will be determined during training.
