Welcome to the Emory Family Medicine Residency Program!
Founded in 1992, the Emory Family Medicine Residency in Atlanta offers the breadth of Family Medicine within one of the nation’s leading academic environments. Our residents train across an unusually diverse network of academic medical centers, safety-net and community hospitals, specialty institutes, community health settings, and our longitudinal Family Medicine continuity practice.
As a fully opposed residency, our residents train alongside learners from many specialties while developing the clinical judgment, collaborative skills, and professional identity required to practice and lead within complex health systems.
The program is embedded within the Emory University School of Medicine and the larger Emory academic community. Residents have access not only to Emory Healthcare, but also to the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory College, the CDC campus, and investigators, educators, and clinicians across the university, creating extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary education, scholarship, advocacy, innovation, and collaboration.

Community hospital medicine within the Emory Healthcare system. - Atlanta VA Health Care System
Care of veterans with complex medical and psychosocial needs. - Emory Musculoskeletal Institute
Exposure to musculoskeletal medicine, orthopedics, rehabilitation, and sports medicine. - Emory at Dunwoody Family Medicine
Our longitudinal continuity practice, where residents care for their own patient panels across all three years of residency. The practice also serves as the medical home for Atlanta United FC.

Community Medicine Is Longitudinal, Not Episodic
Community engagement is built into all three years of residency. Through our Longitudinal Community Medicine curriculum, residents develop sustained relationships with community organizations serving distinct medically underserved populations throughout metropolitan Atlanta. Rather than completing a single community-medicine block, residents return to these settings throughout residency, learning firsthand how social determinants of health affect their patients and developing practical skills in community partnership, advocacy, and population health.
The Atlanta program’s distinction is its combination of academic breadth and individualized, longitudinal ownership of patients, communities, and career development.
Meet our Program Director, Dr. Kim Thompson
Residency Program Director since July 2024, Dr. Thompson brings over 10 years of experience in resident education to our program and has already made a significant impact, including being recognized with a 2024 Outstanding Faculty award. Known for her ability to engage learners, she emphasizes transparency and has a strong track record in educational leadership and a commitment to community engagement.
Every July during Intern Orientation, Dr. Thompson leads the new residents on an Atlanta Community History Tour. It is a conversational, interactive experience that combines local history with discussion about medicine, public health, community development, and the social determinants of health that impact the lives of the people we serve.
