Promotions, Honors, and Recognitions

The following highlights are a sampling of recent accolades including promotions and awards for professional contributions and leadership recognitions.

Cheryl Day, PhD, Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, received a 5 year award from the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) to be lab director for an Immunology Specialty Laboratory (ISL). Dr. Day has expertise in human cellular immune profiling. The ISL at Emory is one of 3 immunology labs funded by ACTG.

Christine M. Dunham, PhD, was promoted to Professor of Biochemistry, September 2021. Dr. Dunham was also named a Kavli Fellow by National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in 2021, became a 2021 Inductee of the Emory 1% Award, and named an ASBMB Fellow in 2022.

Homa Ghalei, PhD, Assistant Professor of the Department of Biochemistry, was highlighted in RNA Society, 2021, for her research in the roles of snoRNPs in ribosome biogenesis and her scientific journey across continents.

Andrey Ivanov, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology, received the 2021 School of Medicine Hidden Gem Award.

Charles P. Moran, Jr., PhD, is now Professor Emeritus of the department of Microbiology and Immunology. We thank him for his dedicated service over the decades to the department and Emory University.

George Painter, PhD, the CEO of DRIVE (Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory), director of the Emory Institute for Drug Development (EIDD), and Professor of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology, has led the discovery of Molnupiravir to fight COVID-19. Full Story in Emory News Center

Renee Read, PhD, was promoted to Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology, September 2021.

Bill Shafer, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, celebrated his 40th year of employment at Emory. He was also re-appointmented to the editorial boards of two ASM journals: Infection and Immunity and Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Stephen F. Traynelis, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology, was named an Emory SOM Dean’s Eminent Investigator, 2021.
