Student Guidelines in the Clinical Setting
Updated Jan. 5, 2021 - Watch the all SOM Student Town Hall (login required)
In the coming weeks, School of Medicine students will no longer be restricted from directly caring for patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.
This revised guideline is based on careful consideration of the pros and cons of students directly caring for patients with COVID-19, the availability of student COVID-19 testing and health care, PPE resources, medical ethics, and the ability to vaccinate our students. This guideline is congruent with recommendations of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC).
Prior to implementing this change, SOM education leaders are working with our infectious diseases colleagues to train students in the proper donning and doffing of PPE, fit-test students for proper N95 masks, and vaccinate all students in the clinical setting in the next 2-3 weeks. We anticipate that students will receive the second dose of vaccine by mid-February at the latest.
Upon completion of those three steps, students, residents, faculty and staff will be notified that the restriction on COVID-19 patient care is being lifted. Until that time, students will continue to be restricted from participating in direct care for patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.
