2021 Recipients

Kathy Griendling, PhD, Department of Medicine
“Dr. Griendling recognizes that mentorship is a critical component of academic success. She has mentored close to sixty trainees; most of them today hold faculty appointments at prestigious national and international institutions. I had the privilege to come to her laboratory in Emory as a postdoctoral fellow in 2004 after finishing my graduate program in Chile, my home country. As an outstanding scientist, she was an exceptional teacher of professional traits that relate to success. At the same time, she assessed my skills, identified potential, and challenged me to seek higher achievement than I would on my own.”

Nima Kokabi, MD, FRCP, Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences
“I have had the privilege to work with Dr. Kokabi on numerous projects where under his mentorship I was able to produce first author publications and abstracts for conferences. He has constantly encouraged me to take advantage of all the opportunities available to me and I am thankful that I have been lucky enough to learn most of my research skills from him. He has gone out of his way to find opportunities for me to build my research acumen and get involved in national conferences and supported me as I applied to scholarships and travel grants.“

Anna Woodbury, MD, Department of Anesthesiology
“Dr. Woodbury is clearly interested in developing our division, department, and anyone she encounters who is interested in scholarship, service, and teaching. She has engaged in coursework via the National Research Mentoring Network. Dr. Woodbury has personally helped me advance myself in teaching, recommending me and encouraging me to pursue and obtain the Site Director position for the palliative care pain rotation at the Atlanta VA, a position that she previously held.”
“In addition to her research mentorship, Dr. Woodbury has provided me with clinical mentorship. She encouraged me to see patients with her at clinic and to assist her with procedures such as fluoroscopically guided pain procedures and spinal cord stimulator implantation. She also gave me the opportunity to work closely with her fellows and building those relationships has been invaluable. As result of Dr. Woodbury’s clinical mentorship, my interest in Pain Medicine grew exponentially.”
