LGBTQ+ Faculty Affinity Group Holiday Party Recap: 

Thank you to all who were able to attend the Holiday Party/ Mentorship Program Launch on December 12th, 2022! Also, a special thank you to Ali John and his partner Joey for allowing the event to take place at their home. We had a wonderful time and are excited to see what the new year holds! 

LGBTQ+ Faculty Affinity Group Mentoring Program Launched

On December 12, 2022 the LGBTQ+ Faculty Affinity Group Mentoring Program officially launched with over 40 mentees and 20 mentors across different departments in the School of Medicine. Mentors and mentees were divided into "families" in order to create a group-like mentorship approach that will allow benefits such as peer support and separate, informal one-on-one relationships supporting career advancement. 

 

Mentors and mentees will participate in quarterly panels, social events, and separate family meetings as the year progresses. As we are in the early stages of the program we hope to open up applications for the program later this year, and are excited to see this program continue grow!

New Associate Editor for JAMA Dermatology Named

Congratulations Howa Yeung (dermatology) on being named the new Associate Editor for JAMA Dermatology! JAMA Dermatology aims to be a leader in developing initiatives to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion within the specialty and within dermatology medical publishing.

Senate Bill 140 

Members of the Affinity Group have been closely tracking Georgia Senate Bill 140 which would prohibit gender-affirming hormonal and surgical care for trans youth under the age of 18. Unfortunately, the bill was adopted by the Senate late on the night of March 6th. Several members of the Affinity Group and other community advocates were present to speak to their senators and local members of the press. Please pay close attention to your e-mail inboxes for action alerts as the bill moves over to the Georgia House for consideration.

Deepa Iyer: Social Justice Workshop 

March 16 | Noon | Hybrid

Join social justice advocate and author, Deepa Iyer for a workshop to map our roles to bring about justice, equity and solidarity. Using the social change ecosystem map, Deepa will lead participants through reflections and discussions that will deepen our understanding and strengthen our commitments to social change.

Remembrance and Resilience 

March 16 | 4 p.m. | Hybrid

Join us to mark the second anniversary of the spa shootings in Atlanta. Deepa Iyer, a social justice advocate and author, will provide remarks about how Asian Americans build community and solidarity during times of crisis. Co-sponsored by Asian American and Pacific Islander Medical Faculty Association, Goizueta Business School and the Office of the Provost.

Emory Black Employee Network (EBEN) is celebrating the voices of Black women of Emory with an appreciation luncheon featuring esteemed author and CEO Monica McCoy. This celebration is open to all Emory Alum and Employees. Co-sponsored by the EUSOM.

How the Politics of Racial Resentment Undermine Individual and Societal Health and Well-Being

Call for Abstracts: Health Equity Day

The Department of Medicine is hosting a Health Equity Day as part of this year's Diversity and Inclusion Week, which will bring together stakeholders from across the institution to share compelling new findings, facilitate scientific exchange and identify opportunities for collaboration. All School of Medicine faculty and staff are invited to submit an abstract for the poster presentation in the following categories: Research, Clinical Quality, Professional Development, Education, Community Advocacy and Policy.
