Juneteenth
June 19 |
A note from the SOM Office of Equity and Inclusion:
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. It commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. We invite you to read about Juneteenth from the almanac that states, "On January 1, 1863, during the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. The proclamation granted freedom to “all persons held as slaves” in 10 Confederate-controlled states. However, for the most part, the order was not enforced until Union soldiers were able to advance into these areas after the end of the war, the beginning of which came in April 1865 with the surrender of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee after the Battle of Appomattox Court House in Virginia.”
On June 19, 1865 the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced by the Union Army, so that enslaved people in the 10 Confederate-controlled states were freed; however, it did not free enslaved people in every state. According to the almanac, "The people of Texas were informed that in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, that all enslaved persons are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.” Shortly thereafter this date was referred to as “Juneteenth,” which is an abbreviation for June 19th. Slavery formally ended in the United States on December 6, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified.
As part of the first Juneteenth at the SOM in 2021, an apology was issued to Dr. Marion G Hood for his denied admission to the SOM in 1958. This continued the work of the history pillar which is part of our Actionable Education Initiative.
In celebration of Juneteenth, please check out Juneteeth Atlanta and events from the Atlanta History Center.

Atlanta Pride 5K Run The Atlanta Pride Run is a 5K that raises money for local nonprofits that assist people that are living with HIV and AIDS. It happened right at the beginning of the pride month on June 2, 2024. This year there were almost 3000 participants, which is significantly more than in the previous years. A few faculty members from the affinity group participated and it was a fun event. Here are the pictures from that day.

Schneider receives Allen Thornell Award
We want to celebrate with great pride, our own Jason Schneider (medicine), for receiving the Allen Thornell Award from Georgia Equality in recognition of his long-term advocacy and work on behalf of LGBTQIA+ people. It was a privilege for our OEI team to witness Dr. Schneider receiving his award. Thank you, Dr. Schneider, for positively impacting the lives of LGBTQIA+ patients at Grady through creating access to gender-affirming care for people who otherwise would not have it and for your tireless dedication to creating safe space for so many.

More than 200 Emory faculty members were nominated by their peers and colleagues for their dedication to improving the health and well-being of our patients and community through the care they provide, the research they conduct and their efforts to teach and inspire learners.
The committee reviewed each nomination and selected those who exemplify the outstanding faculty of the Emory School of Medicine. The quotes below were taken from the nomination materials.
