Message from the Office of the SOM Dean

October 26, 2023

Dear SOM community,

I hope you saw last night’s message from President Fenves.  I echo his sentiments and I am grateful for his leadership.

As health care professionals, we serve as empathetic listeners and communicators, providing a sanctuary of understanding for our patients and colleagues alike. In these times of heightened emotions and differing viewpoints, we must be particularly vigilant about the language we use, not only with our patients but also with our colleagues.

Many of us may hold strong opinions and feelings about the conflict and its origins. While the urge to express these views may be strong, we must remember the potential impact. As President Fenves noted, words are powerful. Let’s use them in a positive way that reflects our commitment to compassion and understanding.

Together, we can navigate these turbulent waters, upholding our shared values and maintaining the integrity of our mission.

Carlos
