Message from the Office of the SOM Dean

October 3, 2023

Dear colleagues and friends:

Over the past three years, SOM faculty, staff and learners have been working on a plan to transform education in all degree and residency programs in the School of Medicine with the goal of ensuring that our curricula and training are not only keeping up with the demands on today’s clinicians and scientists, but also preparing our learners to be at the forefront of medical care in the twenty-first century.

To lead the implementation of such a critically important effort we conducted an extensive search and are pleased to announce that Joe Le Doux, PhD, has been named the executive leader for education transformation and innovation, effective Sept. 5, 2023.

Working with a highly interdisciplinary and diverse group of stakeholders, Dr. Le Doux will develop and direct key programming and facilitate development of infrastructure needed to deliver on the medical education strategic framework. He will be charged with incorporating concepts of intentional design and innovative problem solving into the creation of interprofessional learning opportunities, educational space considerations, and many other elements of our learners’ educational experience.

He will partner with Faculty Affairs and GME leadership to articulate the skills, competencies, and experience types that will enable our faculty and residents to actively support and promote this updated approach to medical education.

Dr. Le Doux has been serving as professor and the Executive Director for Learning and Training in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. He has extensive experience in developing academic initiatives that have been used at Georgia Tech and nationwide. Notably, he has developed and implemented an approach called “Problem-Solving Studio,” a team-based and highly collaborative learning environment that is now being used in most BME core courses.

Dr. Le Doux earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Cornell University and completed a PhD in chemical and biochemical Engineering at Rutgers University. After completing his master’s and prior to entering the PhD program, he served as a submarine officer (lieutenant) in the United States Navy.

Dr. Le Doux went on to complete a research fellowship in Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, then joined the Georgia Tech faculty in Biomedical Engineering in 1999. He has since held numerous leadership positions related to education and training.

We look forward to the continued engagement and support of our entire SOM community as we welcome Dr. Le Doux into this role and work together to transform education in the School of Medicine.
