Emory Integrated Genomics Core (EIGC)

On behalf of the Winship Cancer Institute and the Emory School of Medicine, we are very pleased to announce that Michael E. Zwick, PhD has assumed leadership as Scientific Director for the newly formed Emory Integrated Genomics Core (EIGC), a consolidation of genomics cores from the Winship Cancer Institute and School of Medicine. The goal of this effort is to create a top-tier genomics resource that is widely available to the Emory research community, integrating cutting-edge genomics technologies with downstream bioinformatics analysis. Dr. Zwick is a human geneticist whose expertise in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics will complement the high performance of the members of the newly formed EIGC. Dr. Zwick trained as a PhD student with Dr. Charles H. Langley with a focus on experimental population genetics in Drosophila. As a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Aravinda Chakravarti, Dr. Zwick became an expert in human genetics, high-throughput genomics, and bioinformatics. As a senior US Navy officer in the reserves, Dr. Zwick was recalled to active duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom where he oversaw the deployment of biodefense testing equipment to the Atlantic Fleet, while pursuing research focused on the population genomics of biodefense pathogens. In the Department of Human Genetics, Dr. Zwick’s laboratory has pioneered advances in genomics and bioinformatics technologies to identify genetic variation contributing to common pediatric disorders. In his role as Scientific Director, Dr. Zwick will oversee the operations, strategic planning, and expansion of this core’s services.  This core facility will also serve as the genomics platform for Winship’s NCI Cancer Center Support Grant and will involve both programmatic and physical consolidation.  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Zwick in his new position.
