Steve Warren's advice for young scientists

  • Choose work that feels like play. Warren enjoys sailing with wife Karen, an internal medicine physician at The Emory Clinic, and son Tom, who works in veterinary medicine. But he considers genetics his principal hobby.
  • Luck is an important part of science. Stay open to ideas from other disciplines and learn to recognize and exploit lucky moments.
  • Above all, remember that research has both its exhilarating hills and depressing valleys. Never, ever, ever give up.
