Program Overview

In 1995, Robert Lee, Ph.D., Associate Dean and Director of Multicultural Medical Student Affairs, founded the Summer Science Academy (formerly known as Summer Science Discovery Camp). His vision was to create a learning atmosphere where a student’s natural curiosity of science could be encouraged and freed from the constraints of time, grades, and the distractions of those whose interests were minimal. The program began with eight students and has grown to over 100 participants.

Students participate in hands on lab experiences, group projects, lectures, and field trips. During the two or three week sessions, students will research a scientific topic of his or her choice to present at our Closing Reception. The Academy counselors and teachers are drawn from the ranks of Emory University medical and graduate schools, Emory College, and other highly esteemed colleges and universities. Emory University School of Medicine faculty and alumni have also contributed to our efforts by providing lectures and demonstrations to our students.

Classroom instruction and lab experiences will takes place on the campus of Emory University.
