Immunology (Max Cooper, MD)
Research Focus: In contrast to jawed vertebrates (humans) that utilize VDJ recombination of immunoglobulin-family proteins to generate T/B cell receptors and antibodies, jawless vertebrates (such as lamprey and hagfish) encode diverse antigen recognition receptors through a novel mechanism that joins leucine-rich repeat modules together in a combinatorial manner. My current project is to evaluate the potential use of engineered lamprey VLR antibodies as diagnostic and therapeutic agents in a mouse leukemia model.
