| The MD/PhD Program at Emory University Atlanta, Georgia |
Dear Prospective Student and Future Colleague,
I am pleased to welcome you to the homepage for the Emory University MD/PhD program!
By virtue of your interest in the MSTP, you already know that it is an exciting time to begin a career as a physician-scientist. I share your enthusiasm, and hope that you seriously consider Emory University as the place where you will continue to further your research and medical training.
In terms of medical education, it’s a very exciting time at Emory. We have a new medical school building and a new curriculum, which is combined with a large and diversified network of Emory-affiliated hospitals. This provides for excellence in medical education, both in and out of the classroom.
The cutting edge research at Emory has more breadth and depth than I could ever describe. This is due to both top-notch faculty and exceptional facilities. Emory is home to numerous research buildings, including the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center, the Winship Cancer Institute, and the Yerkes National Primate Research Center (containing the Emory Vaccine Center). Emory also has an affiliation with our next-door neighbor, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and our MSTP has a joint program with the nearby Georgia Institute of Technology. And these facilities only represent a fraction of the outstanding research being done here!
We are also fortunate to be located in a great city. Atlanta has a hint of Southern hospitality with all the amenities, culture, and happenings of a big metropolitan city. It’s no wonder that Atlanta is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the US (the beautiful weather doesn’t hurt either!), and as such, it attracts students and people from all over the country and world.
On a more personal note, I’d like to share something that I think truly sets Emory’s MD/PhD program apart – its student body. Our students are diverse in every sense of the word. We hail from all over the country and world, as Emory has support for both national and international students. We pursue both traditional and non-traditional graduate degrees for an MD/PhD, with some students pursuing degrees like anthropology and epidemiology (through our Rollins School of Public Health). But most importantly, our student body is a wonderful group of people – friendly, enthusiastic, and, with the support of a great administration, actively involved in making our MD/PhD program the best it can be.
Enrolling in an MD/PhD program is a big commitment. It’s important to find a place that not only excels in medicine and research, but a place where you’ll be happy for the duration - a place where the students are friendly, the administration is supportive, and the overall educational experience is exceptional. I’ve found such a place at Emory, and I hope you do too. I’d love to see you around campus in the future!
Sincerely,
Joshua Albrecht
