Didactic quarterly global surgery-specific topic-based meetings throughout PGY-2-5.
Goal
To provide knowledge, attitudes, and skills to create a competent surgical post-graduate pursuing any field with an impact on global health or working with individuals from diverse cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
GLOBE

Global Health Overview by Education and Engagement is a 24-month (or more) track organized by the Global Health & Equity Office at the School of Medicine to support residents and fellows to gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to prepare them for careers that incorporate global health endeavors, leadership, and administrative responsibilities. This 24-month (or more) track combines asynchronous course work, case-based exercises, live panels, and didactic sessions. The track culminates in a global health experience and scholarly capstone project.
Phase I
4 asynchronous online modules and 4 in-person meetings + 1 day retreat.
Topics for 4 modules:
- Introduction to Global Health and understanding its history
- Social determinants of health and sustainable development goals
- Health systems strengthening
- Health Equity, social justice and ethics, climate change and global health
- Each class includes: learning objectives, readings, discussion, speakers, case studies.
Phase II
Capstone project (such as Fogarty, independently designed research, etc.) Phase 2 may culminate in a global/local rotation experience, pending funding and travel restrictions
Clinical Rotations
Goal
To give exposure to and knowledge of broad-based surgical skills in which competence is expected in a rural or global clinical practice.
Rotations (during PGY 2,3,4 years)
- Emory Electives (Orthopedics, Urology, OB/GYN, neurosurgery, OMFS)
- Rural Electives (Rome GA, Alaska)
- International Elective (Ethiopia)
Research
Residents are expected to be involved in at least one global/rural research project during residency with the guidance of a faculty mentor. Ideally, they are using their two-year Research Sabbatical to pursue more vigorous, in-depth research experiences related to surgical care, education and research in low-resource settings. Residents are encouraged to pursue research opportunities with Emory global surgery faculty or other related programs. Funding sources relevant to work in global surgery are listed below.
Distinctions for Completion of Track
Emory School of Medicine Department of Surgery Certificate in Underserved Care
- Must attend 75% of quarterly Department of Surgery global surgery topic-based meetings.
- Must complete Emory GLOBE track.
- Must complete at least one scholarly project in global/rural surgery.
- Must complete all rural/global clinical rotations.
- Must be in good standing.
Emory School of Medicine Certificate of Distinction
- Must attend 75% of quarterly Department of Surgery global surgery topic-based meetings.
- Must complete Emory GLOBE track.
- Must complete at least one scholarly project in global surgery.
- Must be in good standing.
