Ira K. Schwartz, M.D., is a pediatrician with sub-specialty training in infectious diseases. Following his initial clinical education at Children’s Memorial Hospital/Northwestern University Medical Center, he worked for the International Rescue Committee in rural Thailand, and then moved to Atlanta in 1981 to accept a position at the US Centers for Disease Control as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in the Division of Parasitic Diseases. He spent several years working on the problem of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children in sub-Saharan Africa. Following further clinical training at the University of Chicago, he and his family moved to Kenya, where he was assigned to the Kenya Medical Research Institute in Nairobi from 1986-1988. Since 1992, he has been on the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine and the Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Schwartz directs the Southeast AIDS Training and Education Center (SEATEC), a federally-funded regional AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC), and helps care for children affected by HIV at the Grady Infectious Disease Program. In addition to his current clinical and HIV-related responsibilities, he is an Associate Dean for Medical Education and Student Affairs and Director of Admissions.
