Introduction
The School of Medicine MD Student Handbook defines the structure and expectations for MD students. Included herein are student-related policies, rules and regulations of Emory University and the Emory University School of Medicine (EUSOM). In addition, this Student Handbook guides students on matters of admission, academic and professional standards, progress and promotion, financial aid, student organizations, disability insurance, academic and personal counseling, and student health.
EUSOM is committed to teaching students the high academic and professional standards necessary to be an exemplary student, teammate, and physician. Part of being an excellent physician is being aware of expectations and making every effort to meet or exceed these expectations. At times when students do not meet these expectations, EUSOM is committed to the development of our students through transparent consequences that are growth-minded and safety oriented. EUSOM abides by and follows all University policies, except where noted.
The MD student handbook is the primary space for students to understand the expectations of EUSOM and how to operate as an MD student in the School of Medicine. The intent of creating the MD Student Handbook is to:
- Ensure, as best as possible, the safety and well-being of students and patients
- Provide student support
- Support students' professional development
- Maintain a positive learning environment
- Protect institutional reputation
- Comply with accreditation standards and regulations
- Uphold academic integrity
- Establish standardization that promotes consistency and fairness
- Promote accountability
- Promote equity and inclusion
