All students, regardless of citizenship, must first become admitted to the School of Medicine before scholarship eligibility can be evaluated.

INSURANCE

Health insurance is mandatory for ALL students enrolled in the School of Medicine at Emory University . Citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. may purchase the Emory University Student Health Services Insurance Plan (offered by Aetna/The Chickering Group) OR provide documentation of an existing health insurance plan from an outside carrier that meets mandatory health insurance requirements (see list below). International students MUST purchase the Aetna/Chickering insurance plan.

To read the Aetna/Chickering health insurance plan brochure and enroll in the plan, go to www.chickering.com, click on “Student Connection,” choose “Find Your School” and enter “ Emory University .” Please be aware that the Aetna/Chickering plan meets, and in most cases exceeds, the mandatory health insurance requirements (see list below). In addition, the Aetna/Chickering plan has no pre-existing limitations or exclusions.

MANDATORY HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR PRIVATE CARRIERS

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. and do not purchase the Aetna/Chickering insurance plan, you must be able to provide documentation of health insurance coverage that meets all mandatory health insurance requirements. Any outside plan must have at a minimum:

  • Coverage that allows the insured student to receive outpatient, emergency, specialist and inpatient care, diagnostic testing and procedures, and mental health inpatient and outpatient care, including alcohol and substance abuse treatment, in Atlanta, GA.
  • A deductible not greater than $1,050 per policy year. If the annual deductible exceeds $1,050, the insured student must have an approved Healthcare Savings Account (HSA) that will allow the student to seek needed medical and mental health care when recommended by a healthcare provider and will cover all deductible expenses over $1,050.
  • The insurance must be provided by an insurance company domiciled in the United States.

Information about insurance requirements, rates, deadlines, and compliance forms will be communicated directly with all accepted students prior to matriculation. Applicants may also visit the Emory University Student Health Services website at www.emory.edu/UHS and click on “Fees/Insurance”. Please note that new plan information and rates for the academic year beginning in the fall are posted to the website each summer.

The Financial Aid Handbook is updated for each academic year. Updates are posted on this site as soon as the new handbook is available.

APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID

All financial aid applicants MUST complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which will be used to determine eligibility for federal aid programs.

Students who wish to be considered for need-based grants and low interest loans awarded directly by Emory University MUST ALSO complete the College Scholarship Service (CSS) PROFILE. Applicants who complete the CSS PROFILE must also provide signed copies of both the student’s and parents’ federal tax return for the previous year, along with all tax schedules and W-2s. Students who do not provide parental financial information on the CSS PROFILE will be considered for federal aid only.

Both forms can be completed online at:

FAFSA
www.fafsa.ed.gov
Emory University code is 001564

CSS PROFILE
www.collegeboard.org
Emory School of Medicine code is 0140

Applicants are strongly encouraged to complete both the FAFSA and CSS PROFILE by February 15 (new forms for each year are available January 1). The University begins awarding financial aid packages on a rolling bases in April, so early submission of both financial aid forms and all support documentation will allow the applicant the fullest consideration for financial assistance.

The final deadline to submit financial aid forms is April 1.

Please note that citizens of foreign countries are ineligible to receive U.S. federal financial aid, but may be eligible to receive merit-based scholarships. Permanent residents of the United States with an I-151, I-551, or I-551C VISA are eligible to receive federal aid, as well as merit-based funding.

All students, regardless of citizenship, must first become admitted to the School of Medicine before scholarship eligibility can be evaluated.

Some students may require more financial assistance than is available through the traditional aid programs. For these students, Emory can offer private (non-federal) credit-based loans. These private loans require favorable credit ratings to qualify. To be prepared for this possibility, we strongly encourage you to obtain a credit report and verify your credit rating as soon as possible to avoid processing delays.

A complete listing of all types of financial assistance available through the School of Medicine is included in the Financial Aid Handbook (see information above).
